The forecasters are predicting a La Nina year and that should translate into a much better snowfall for Western Canada. Check out the Brett Anderson blog at http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/anderson/story/35768/long-range-model-forecast-out-to-february-2011-1.asp for a very promising outlook. January and February are very interesting because the dividing line between colder weather and snowy weather is roughly located around Banff / Jasper. I wouldn't put money on such a long range forecast but the implication is that Louise and Sunshine might have a much better conditions this year. (Let's hope.) The odds are even better for Fernie and Castle to have some big numbers during powder season. Only time will tell.

The outlook for Sunshine Village looks fantastic (if it was February). Fresh snow throughout the week and highs around zero mean conditions should be soft with the ice well covered. I haven't heard about high winds but that could be a factor in uncovering some icy slopes. The top of Goat's Eye is probably a crap shoot. But on Sat / Sun there should be some nice turns on the Divide. There seems to be a typical spring weather pattern in the works - sunny in the morning, clouding over in the afternoon. You might want to get there early to enjoy the sun.

Don't put the boards away just yet. It looks like we will get one last taste of winter in the mountains this week. The forecast for Calgary looks very crap - cold and rainy right through Sunday. But in the mountains I see temperatures between -5C and -10C and plenty of snow for today and tomorrow. Keep your eye on the snow reports for Louise and Sunshine. It might be your last chance for a mid week powder day.

Yaaaaaah! We've got a couple more days of heat in the Rockies. It was very tempting to sneak out for an afternoon at Louise today. I checked the web cam and it was total bluebird with a forecast high of 16C. Tomorrow will be much the same. But on Thursday the cooling trend begins. By the weekend we'll be experiencing highs around the zero mark and that spells I. C. E. Without a bit of fresh snow I wouldn't even bother this weekend. My recommendation? Take tomorrow off and work Sunday.

After the last couple weeks of consistent and sometimes voluminous snowfall it appears that we've hit the end of a pretty good run. Whistler only has a touch of snow in the forecast through this week and I haven't seen that in quite a while. Meanwhile it looks eve drier as you head eastward. But that's OK. It is spring after all. I know because it's snowing outside right now and that is a sure sign of spring in Calgary. So we may actually get some spring skiing this weekend. The temperatures appear to be slowly rising through the week and could crack zero in the mountains by Saturday. If the sun is out that is a recipe for soft snow and cold beers on the patio. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
